Minitube Linux Mint

Unofficial and cross-platform desktop YouTube app ‘Minitube‘ has been updated with playback fixes and minor improvements.

In 20.04 and 20.10 the version of the chromium-browser package no longer matches the Chromium version running on your system. On 20.10, the package is stuck at v85 but Chromium was actually silently updated under the hood in the snap to version 87. Jul 31, 2018 I have spent days trying to install Minitube, which I have successfully used on Linux Mint 18.3, and I have tried every suggestion given on the sites I have found. I normally get the message that there is a conflict with phonon4qt5-backend-vlc.

Developer Flavio Tordini, announcing the release on his blog, says he ‘rushed out’ the update to solve recent playback issues affecting some YouTube videos.

But seizing the opportunity he’s also included a small number of usability tweaks.

It’s now possible to unsubscribe from a channel by right-clicking on its tile in the subscription pane and selecting the corresponding menu entry, as well as marking all videos for a channel ‘as watched’.

Also new is a terminal command for ending playback, with a similar action available for Unity and GNOME 3 users through their respective app menus.

Flavio says that Minitube will shortly undergo porting to Qt5 and see its Phonon backend replaced by libvlc. Week 15 reflectionguided reading 101.

Version 2.2 of the application is available to download for Windows and Mac both free and paid builds. Source code/binary for Linux can be found on the official website.

Debian installers packaged by Lffl’s Roberto Ferramosca are also available to make things easier.

Hi,Minitube
I'm using Mint 17 cinammon and installed Minitube, which I have never tried to use before, but keep reading that it's great. Well, it starts, lets me search and find videos, but will not actually play the video. I tried to use the download option, but it just displays Preparing with a progress bar that sits at 0% and doesn't move. The minitube website has no instructions that I can find.
As with most things Linux, I am sure there is a secret trick of something I have to install or configure to get it to work, but I can't find the answer by googling. Can anyone help?

I should add that I can go to the Youtube site and successfully play the video from there.
Thanks,
EDIT: After further experimentation, it seems that it will play *some* videos. I found some cat videos it played, but it will still not play most videos, especially music. Is there some kind of special marker on certain videos? If so, why can I play them on youtube but not from minitube?
